WANA (Sep 26) – The Vice Speaker of Iran’s Parliament announced that a request by 71 members of parliament to revise the country’s strategic nuclear policy will be reviewed on Sunday.

Ali Nikzad, Vice Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, said in a media interview today: “Recently, more than 71 of my fellow lawmakers signed a letter to the Supreme National Security Council requesting a strategic change in Iran’s nuclear doctrine. This issue will definitely be seriously discussed in parliament on Sunday. Through active diplomacy and decisive action, parliament will strive to secure Iran’s legitimate nuclear rights.”

He added: “Following the 12-day war, parliament took a revolutionary step by passing legislation to suspend the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, which later became law after approval by the Guardian Council. The entire world knows that the Islamic Republic of Iran is not pursuing nuclear weapons in its doctrine. What we seek is peaceful nuclear energy for water transfer, electricity generation, agriculture, and medical purposes.”

Referring to the history of Iran’s nuclear issue, Nikzad said: “Before the revolution, the first country insisting that Iran should develop nuclear energy was the United States. But after the revolution, when the political system changed by the will of the people, that same country claimed Iran must not have nuclear energy.”

The Vice Speaker stressed: “We are a member of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), yet those who should have supported us over this period not only failed to do so, but, ironically, states with thousands of nuclear weapons now argue that others must not have them.”
