WANA (Dec 11) – Iran’s national football team is placed in a very good group in the 2026 World Cup group stage, alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand, forming Group G of the tournament. This increases the likelihood of Iran advancing from the group stage and raises expectations for the team.

Meanwhile, a question on the minds of many Iranian football fans is: if the national team advances, which team will it face? There are now three possibilities for Iran to progress to the next stage.

Advancing as the group winner

Amir Ghalenoei’s team, if they finish first in Group G, will play against one of the third-placed teams from Groups A, E, H, I, or J. In Group A, Mexico, one of the World Cup hosts, is likely to finish first, and the third place could go to South Africa, South Korea, or the winner of the UEFA Playoff D, all roughly equally likely.

In Group E, Germany has the highest chance of finishing first, and one of the Ivory Coast or Ecuador will likely be third, with Curaçao as the other team in the group.

In Group H, Spain and Uruguay are likely first and second, while Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde will compete for third.

In Group I, aside from France, which is the main favorite to finish first, predicting the other teams’ positions is difficult; the third-place team will be one of Senegal, Norway, or the team joining via FIFA Playoff 2.

In Group J, Argentina is the favorite to advance, followed by Austria, and either Algeria or Jordan will likely be third.

Advancing as group runner-up

If Iran advances as second in the group, it will play against the runner-up of Group D. This group includes the host nation, the USA, along with Paraguay, Australia, and the UEFA Playoff C winner, any of which could finish second.

Advancing as one of the best third-placed teams

In this case, the situation is more complex, as it depends on which teams advance as third-placed. However, there are two possible paths: either a match against the winner of Group I, likely France, or against the winner of Group B, which could be one of the teams in that group—host Canada, Qatar, Switzerland, or the UEFA Playoff A winner.

Now it remains to see Iran’s placement in the group stage and which team they will face.
