Iran’s Statement on Australia Downgrading Ties
WANA (Aug 27) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran has issued a statement in response to the Australian government’s decision to downgrade diplomatic relations with Tehran, describing the move as unjustifiable and affirming that Iran reserves the right to take reciprocal measures.
Expressing regret over Canberra’s decision to expel the Iranian ambassador and several diplomats, the ministry said this action was “incompatible with the tradition of diplomatic relations between the two countries.” It strongly rejected the allegations that Iran promotes antisemitism, emphasizing that antisemitism is rooted in Western and European history, and that in recent years the concept has been misused to silence opposition to occupation, apartheid, and crimes against the Palestinian people.
The statement further stressed that Australia’s move aligns with the policies of the Israeli regime, aiming to divert global attention from the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. “The responsibility for the consequences of this misguided decision—including potential difficulties for the Iranian community living in Australia—rests with the Australian government,” the ministry said.

Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi also reacted to the expulsion of Iran’s ambassador, stating: “Apparently, Iran must pay the price for the Australian people’s support of Palestine. Australia should realize that seeking the approval of a regime led by war criminals will only embolden Netanyahu and those like him.”
Meanwhile, Australia’s Home Affairs Minister, Tony Burke, dismissed claims that Israel was behind Canberra’s decision to expel the Iranian envoy, calling such allegations “utterly baseless.” Nonetheless, the Israeli embassy in Australia welcomed the move in a statement, alleging that Iran is a threat not only to Jews and Israel but also to the wider world, including Australia.
