Iran’s Strong Reaction to the IAEA: The Right to Defend Remains Intact
WANA (Jun 27) – Amid escalating tensions between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran’s Foreign Minister announced that the Iranian Parliament has passed a resolution to suspend voluntary cooperation with the agency.
Announcing the decision, Abbas Araghchi said: “Parliament has voted to halt cooperation with the IAEA until the safety and security of our nuclear activities are guaranteed.”
He openly criticized IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, stating: “Grossi’s insistence on inspecting bombed sites under the pretext of safeguards monitoring is meaningless and could even indicate bad intentions.” According to Araghchi, not only has Grossi refused to condemn Israeli and American attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities, but by “concealing the closure of Iran’s past cases,” he has also paved the way for a politically motivated resolution against Tehran at the IAEA Board of Governors.
Araghchi went on to describe the agency and its director general as “fully responsible for the current disgraceful situation,” stressing that “Iran reserves the right to take any necessary action to defend its interests, its people, and its sovereignty.”
These statements come as Iran’s cooperation with the IAEA faces unprecedented strain, especially following the recent Israeli attacks on Iranian territory.
