Iran’s Trade with Neighbors Reaches $38 Billion
WANA (Nov 05) – Iran’s trade volume with its 15 neighboring countries reached 64.875 million tons in the first seven months of the current year, valued at approximately $38.154 billion, according to newly released customs data.
Neighboring states have long been among Iran’s main export destinations due to geographical proximity, cultural ties, and logistical advantages. Reduced transportation costs, ease of cross-border exchanges, historical connections, and shared economic needs have helped maintain these markets as strategic hubs for Iran’s trade—despite international sanctions and financial restrictions.
The latest figures indicate continued stability in trade flows with neighboring countries. The total trade value recorded in this period is nearly equivalent to the same period last year, signaling Iran’s ability to preserve its regional market presence.
$2.2 Billion Trade with Eurasian Economic Union
Alongside trade with its neighbors, Iran’s economic exchanges with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) also showed notable growth. In the first seven months of the year, Iran traded 4.9 million tons of goods with EAEU members, worth about $2.2 billion.
This trend reflects the growing importance of the EAEU as a commercial partner for Iran. The entry into a free trade agreement with the bloc in May has opened new avenues for expanded economic cooperation.
Overall, trade with neighboring states remains an essential pillar of Iran’s foreign trade structure, while deeper engagement with the Eurasian bloc offers opportunities for greater market diversification and improved access to regional and extra-regional markets.
Experts note, however, that further progress depends on the development of transport infrastructure—road, sea, and rail—modernization of customs systems, improvement of logistics networks, and resolving financial transfer challenges. Strategic policy support in these areas could significantly boost Iran’s share of regional trade and strengthen the long-term growth of non-oil exports.
With effective planning and leveraging of existing geo-economic advantages, Iran could enhance its role as a key commercial player in the wider regional market.
