WANA (Sep 05) – Amir Saeid Iravani, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations, called on the international community to unequivocally condemn recent U.S. and Israeli attacks against Iran’s nuclear facilities and hold the perpetrators accountable. His remarks came during a General Assembly meeting marking the International Day Against Nuclear Tests.

While commending Kazakhstan’s initiative in establishing this international day, Iravani stressed that it serves as a reminder of the “catastrophic consequences of nuclear tests for human health, the environment, and global security—consequences that remain a lasting legacy for generations to come.” He added that, alongside remembering past victims, the world must also address emerging threats to nuclear safety.

“Today, the dangers once associated with nuclear tests are re-emerging in another form—through deliberate attacks on safeguarded nuclear facilities,” Iravani said. “The threat or use of force against nuclear installations is just as dangerous as nuclear explosions themselves.”

The Iranian envoy described the recent Israeli and U.S. strikes against the Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan facilities as “reckless” and “a clear violation of the UN Charter,” warning that such actions undermine multilateralism, erode trust in the non-proliferation regime, and pose a serious threat to international peace and security.

He further pointed to Israeli attacks on Iranian cities hosting International Monitoring System (IMS) stations, saying these actions “endanger the safety and integrity of IMS facilities, put technical staff at risk, and directly target the very foundation of the global verification system.” Such attacks, he warned, represent a major obstacle to the entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).

“Condemning nuclear tests while turning a blind eye to actions that produce similar consequences is nothing but hypocrisy and double standards,” Iravani stressed. He noted that attacking safeguarded facilities not only violates Iran’s inalienable rights under Article IV of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), but also undermines the treaty’s credibility and the trust it is built upon.

He underlined that the peaceful use of nuclear energy, the protection of all nuclear installations against threats or force, and the pursuit of nuclear disarmament are not separate goals but mutually reinforcing objectives. According to him, the international community must transform the inviolability of peaceful nuclear facilities into a universal norm, ensuring that perpetrators of such violations cannot enjoy impunity.

Recalling the victims of nuclear tests, Iravani concluded: “Silence in the face of new threats would be nothing less than a betrayal of their memory. Today we must resolutely confront all forms of nuclear danger—whether through tests, threats, or attacks—and strive for a world where nuclear energy serves only human progress and dignity, never its destruction.”
