WANA (Sep 19) – Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, following the Security Council session and the vote on the extension of sanctions against Iran, strongly criticized the Council’s recent action, describing it as imposed under pressure from certain Western members.

In his opening remarks, Irouani said: “Those who have failed to fulfill their commitments cannot misuse UNSC Resolution 2231 to impose the reimposition of sanctions. Today’s action was carried out under pressure from the United States, the United Kingdom, and France, undermining the Council’s impartiality.”

He emphasized Iran’s clear stance, adding: “Dialogue and diplomacy are essential to prevent escalating tensions. Resolution 2231 should conclude as agreed. The efforts by the European trio to reimpose sanctions are baseless, illegal, and unjustified.”

The Iranian representative condemned the European countries’ move, stating: “This action has no legal basis and is null and void. The United States withdrew from the JCPOA, the European trio failed to fulfill their obligations, and Israel, with U.S. support, attacked Iran’s nuclear facilities under IAEA supervision. Despite this, Iran has maintained constructive cooperation with the IAEA.”

He continued: “Instead of condemning the Israeli aggression, the European trio supported it and are now punishing Iran. This approach reflects double standards and political misuse of the Security Council.”

Irouani described the recent vote as “split, engineered, and illegal” and noted: “It demonstrates that no consensus exists in the Council. Today’s hasty and unnecessary action carries no obligations for Iran to implement.”

He stressed: “The United States and the three European countries bear full responsibility for the serious consequences of this decision, which effectively undermines diplomacy.”

Closing his remarks, the Iranian representative highlighted the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program: “Iran’s nuclear program will neither be destroyed by bombs nor halted by sanctions, and it will not deviate from its peaceful path. Diplomacy remains open, but Iran will decide with whom and on what basis it engages.”
