WANA (Jan 27) – Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations has warned against what he described as a persistent pattern of unlawful and threatening behavior by the United States, calling on the UN Security Council to take a clear and transparent stance in response.

Speaking at a Security Council meeting on “Promoting and Strengthening the Rule of Law in the Maintenance of International Peace and Security,” Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani said repeated threats by U.S. officials against Tehran constitute a clear violation of the UN Charter and fundamental principles of international law.

He stressed that the continued use of threats, military intimidation, and attempts to impose domination over sovereign states has severely undermined the rule of law at the international level. According to Iravani, the Security Council cannot remain silent in the face of such conduct and must “explicitly and accurately name violations for what they are.”

The Iranian envoy emphasized that the UN Charter is not an optional framework, nor a document from which powerful states may selectively choose provisions that serve their interests while disregarding those that impose legal constraints.

He pointed to what he described as a consistent pattern of unilateral and illegal actions by the United States, including bypassing the authority of the Security Council, disregarding the jurisdiction of international judicial bodies, threatening the occupation or control of foreign territories, and deliberately weakening UN specialized agencies.

Iravani warned that such unilateral actions have eroded multilateralism and posed serious risks to international peace and security.

Referring to recent statements by the U.S. President, the Iranian representative said that Washington has openly and repeatedly threatened the Islamic Republic of Iran with the use of force and military intervention. He described these remarks as clear, direct, and not open to misinterpretation, adding that they have been accompanied by explicit attempts to incite unrest and promote interference in Iran’s internal affairs.

He further noted that these policies have had severe human consequences, stressing that violence resulting from U.S.-supported armed and terrorist groups has led to the loss of innocent civilian lives. Iravani said the United States bears full legal and moral responsibility for the foreseeable consequences of its actions, including civilian casualties and the destruction of public and private property.

In conclusion, Iravani cautioned that if threats of force, unlawful military actions, coercion, and regime-change policies are allowed to become cost-free and normalized tools of international relations, the credibility of the UN Charter and the authority of the Security Council will be gravely undermined.

He stressed that no state, regardless of its power, is above the law, and that the Security Council has a responsibility to speak clearly, firmly, and decisively in response to violations of international law.
