IRGC: U.S. Fifth Fleet Headquarters Targeted in Missile and Drone Strike
WANA (Jun 03) – Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it had carried out a missile and drone attack on the headquarters of the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet and a U.S. military airbase in the region, describing the operation as retaliation for recent American attacks on Iranian targets and what it called violations of security in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement released early Wednesday, the IRGC’s Public Relations Office said a series of U.S. actions against Iranian interests and facilities had prompted a direct military response from Iran.
According to the statement, “late last night, the aggressor U.S. military struck an Iranian oil tanker near the Strait of Hormuz with an airborne projectile,” causing damage to the vessel’s engine room.
The IRGC said that in response, the vessel Panaya, described in the statement as belonging to the “American-Zionist enemy,” was targeted by missiles fired by the IRGC Navy.
The statement further claimed that tensions escalated after U.S. forces launched another attack, this time targeting an IRGC communications tower in southern Qeshm Island. In response, the IRGC said, “a U.S. air and helicopter base located in one of the regional countries, along with the headquarters of the U.S. Fifth Fleet, were targeted in a missile and drone operation carried out by the IRGC Aerospace Force.”
The statement also referred to previous warnings issued by Iran, saying: “We had already warned that any act of aggression would be met with a different and more severe response, and we acted accordingly. These responses should serve as a lesson.”
The IRGC further warned against any disruption to maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, stating: “We reiterate that undermining the security of the Strait of Hormuz will carry a heavy price for the aggressor U.S. military.”
