WANA (Sep 28) – The spokesperson for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission stated that no decision has yet been made in Parliament’s open session regarding Iran’s withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), emphasizing that such a move would require national consensus.

In an interview, Ebrahim Rezaei confirmed that the topic of NPT withdrawal was raised during the recent closed-door session of Parliament, noting, “This is a demand shared by many MPs. We currently have around 15 proposals in Parliament regarding NPT withdrawal in response to the activation of the snapback mechanism. However, no official decision has been taken so far.”

Rezaei stressed the need for broad agreement: “This decision demands national consensus. While I personally believe Iran should leave the NPT, it requires coordination at the highest levels.”

“No Benefit in Remaining in the NPT”

Rezaei argued that Iran’s continued participation in the NPT lacks justification, stating: “According to the NPT and the IAEA’s statute, the Agency is obliged to assist member states in developing their nuclear industry and technology — something it has failed to do in Iran’s case. Despite accepting extensive inspections to prove the peaceful nature of our nuclear program, the IAEA did not fulfill its commitments. Instead, it created pretexts that eventually led to attacks against our country.”

He added, “We have seen no benefits from remaining in the NPT or cooperating with the IAEA, and we see no reason to continue.”

“Parliament Is Independent of the Executive Branch”

Responding to President Pezeshkian’s recent statement that Iran would not withdraw from the NPT, Rezaei asserted: “Parliament is independent. While the President chairs the Supreme National Security Council, he cannot impose his view on Parliament. Lawmakers are elected representatives of the Iranian people, and such a major decision must come through national consensus — particularly among the branches of power.”

15 Draft Bills Submitted; One Finalized by Commission

Rezaei concluded by stating that 15 proposals for NPT withdrawal have been submitted to the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission. The commission has finalized one draft, but it has not yet been scheduled for debate in the Parliament’s open session.

He explained the essence of the draft bill: “If the snapback mechanism is triggered, the Iranian government would be obligated to submit a formal request for NPT withdrawal to the IAEA Board of Governors.”
