Israeli Soldier Charged with Suspected Iran Espionage
WANA (Nov 20) – Israeli prosecutors on Thursday placed a 22-year-old soldier from Beersheba under criminal prosecution on suspicion of spying for Iran during his military service.
According to an Israeli newspaper, prosecutors claim that Rafael Reuveni had been in contact with an alleged Iranian intelligence operative and had sent him videos taken near his home, as well as footage of a bus stop and a shopping center in southern occupied Palestine.
The reports further allege that the soldier also sent the Iranian contact a photo of his military ID card and provided information about the base where he served.
Israeli sources, citing the prosecution, assert that the former soldier agreed to carry out certain tasks for the supposed Iranian handler in exchange for approximately 2,700 dollars.
According to the report, the 22-year-old was arrested last month based on information from the Shin Bet security agency, and prosecutors have asked the Beersheba District Court to keep him in custody until the end of the legal proceedings.
This is not the first time Israeli authorities have arrested individuals on charges of spying for Iran, accusations they have repeatedly made in previous cases.
