WANA (Jun 22) – The first high-level negotiation session under the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding has concluded in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, attended by representatives from the Islamic Republic of Iran, the United States of America, and the two mediating parties, the Government of Qatar and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

 

The Lake Lucerne meeting was held in a positive and constructive atmosphere. Encouraging progress has been achieved, including the establishment of a mechanism for further technical talks.

 

The parties have agreed to form a high-level committee that will provide political oversight for the mediation process.

 

Senior negotiators will report regularly to the high-level committee and will lead working groups focused on the nuclear issue, sanctions, and a monitoring and dispute resolution group to guarantee the effective implementation of the memorandum of understanding and other related matters.

 

The high-level committee has agreed on a roadmap to reach a final agreement within 60 days, which paves the way for the immediate commencement of further technical negotiations.

 

Furthermore, a communication hotline has been established between the parties for the duration specified in Clause 5 of the memorandum of understanding to prevent incidents and misunderstandings, with the goal of ensuring the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

 

The parties also agreed on the creation of a joint de-escalation unit between the sides and Lebanon, facilitated by the mediators, to ensure adherence to the cessation of military operations in Lebanon as outlined in the memorandum of understanding. Technical negotiations regarding all outstanding issues will continue at the Bürgenstock resort until the end of the week.
