WANA (Jul 20) – The number of injuries from the 5.2 and 5.7 magnitude earthquakes that struck Kermanshah province has risen to 10, according to the National Disaster Management Organization.

 

Omid Mohtarami, spokesperson for the organization, stated that most of the casualties occurred as residents were rushing to evacuate their homes. Out of the 10 injured individuals, four remain hospitalized under medical care, while the other six have been discharged after receiving treatment.

 

Mohtarami noted that damage assessment teams remain deployed across affected towns and villages. Thus far, no significant destruction has been reported, with structural impact limited to minor cracks in the walls of older residential units.

 

The spokesperson attributed the low level of damage to the extensive reconstruction and retrofitting efforts that took place following the major 2016 earthquake in the region.

 

He explained that because a significant portion of local homes had been fortified over the past decade, the impact of the recent tremors was substantially mitigated.

 

Following the main quakes in the Kouzeran district, at least 14 aftershocks have been recorded. The Kermanshah Province Disaster Management Headquarters remains on high alert to respond to any further seismic activity or emergency service needs.
