WANA (Mar 10) – Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, issued a message congratulating Mojtaba Khamenei on his selection as the new Supreme Leader of Iran.

 

In an official statement, Barzani extended his congratulations to Khamenei and the Iranian people, wishing him success in his new responsibilities as leader of the Islamic Republic.

 

In the message, Barzani said the Kurdistan Region hopes to continue expanding and strengthening its historic and friendly relations with Iran, emphasizing cooperation based on shared interests between the two peoples and peaceful coexistence across the region.

 

Following the U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran on Feb 28, 2026, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Seyed Ali Khamenei, was assassinated. After days of consultations, Iran’s Assembly of Experts chose his son, Seyed Mojtaba Khamenei, as Iran’s new Supreme Leader.
