WANA (Aug 11) – Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, met with Iraq’s National Security Advisor, Qasim al-Araji, on Monday to discuss the implementation of the bilateral security agreement, the regional security situation, and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, including the starvation and killing of Palestinians.

During the meeting, Al-Araji stressed that the Iraqi government is making serious efforts to prevent any security breaches aimed at aggression against its neighboring countries.

Larijani praised the significant role of the Iraqi people in serving pilgrims of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him), describing them as “brave and generous,” and noting that “the road to Karbala today stands as a testament to Iraqi generosity.”

Both sides reviewed the status of the signed security agreement between the two countries and underscored the importance of action by the international community to halt the ongoing crimes in Gaza.

Larijani also commended Iraq’s balanced foreign policy and the security and stability it has helped foster both domestically and in the wider region.

Al-Araji welcomed Larijani upon his arrival at Baghdad International Airport for his first official visit to Iraq. Following his meetings in Iraq, Larijani is scheduled to travel to Lebanon.

Before departing for Iraq and Lebanon on his first official trip since his appointment as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani outlined the objectives of his visit: “This trip has two parts. The first is Iraq — a friendly and neighboring country with which we have strong trade relations,” he said.

He added: “Cooperation between our two nations is at a very good level, with the Arbaeen pilgrimage being a prime example. We thank the Iraqi government in advance for the excellent cooperation they extend to pilgrims during Arbaeen.”

The second leg of the trip, Larijani said, will be to Lebanon: “Lebanon is a very important and influential country in the region and in West Asia. Iran has had longstanding ties with the Lebanese government and people. Many influential scholars in Iran have come from Lebanon, so there is a shared civilizational heritage between the two countries.”

He added: “That is why our cooperation with Lebanon has deep roots and is broad in scope. On various regional issues, we regularly consult with one another. Given the current special circumstances, we will meet with officials and key figures in Lebanon.”
