Larijani: The Consequences of Europe’s Action Against the IRGC Will Affect Their Own Armed Forces
WANA (Jan 30) – The Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has strongly criticized the European Union’s recent decision regarding the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), warning of its legal and security consequences for European countries.
Reacting to the EU’s move to place the IRGC on its so-called terrorist list, Ali Larijani stressed that, under a resolution passed by Iran’s Parliament, the armed forces of countries that have participated in adopting or implementing such a decision are legally regarded as “terrorist.” He said responsibility for the consequences of this action would rest with the very European governments involved in making the decision.
Larijani expressed this position in a post on the social media platform X, describing the EU’s move as hostile and lacking any legal basis. He added that the European Union is fully aware of Iran’s domestic laws and the reciprocal implications of such decisions, and therefore cannot ignore their consequences.
His remarks followed a decision by the EU Foreign Affairs Council at the conclusion of its meeting in Brussels to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps—an official and lawful military institution within Iran’s defense structure—as a terrorist organization. Tehran has described the move as political, illegal, and contrary to the principles of international law.
Iranian officials argue that the decision also contradicts the EU’s own established legal procedures. Under EU regulations, designating an entity as a terrorist organization requires a judicial ruling by a court in one of the member states—a condition that, according to Tehran, was not met in this case.
From Iran’s perspective, the hasty decision was taken without regard for its political and security ramifications and was driven purely by political motives, including alignment with pressure from the United States and the Israeli regime.
In the same context, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has previously criticized the EU’s approach, describing the decision as a “strategic mistake” and warning of its negative impact on relations between Iran and Europe.

EU Lists Iran’s IRGC as a Terrorist Organization
WANA (Jan 29) – The European Union has taken a politically charged and controversial step by placing Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)—an official branch of the country’s armed forces—on its so-called terrorist organizations list, a move Tehran describes as illegal and inconsistent with the EU’s own legal procedures.
