Lavrov, Araghchi Hold Phone Talks on Escalating Situation Around Iran
WANA (Mar 23) – The foreign ministers of Iran and Russia held a phone conversation to discuss the latest regional developments and the security implications of recent military actions.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, spoke with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, focusing on the consequences of U.S. and Israeli military aggression against Iran.
During the call, Araghchi reaffirmed Iran’s determination to defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He warned that any threat targeting Iran’s energy infrastructure would constitute a “clear example of a war crime and genocide,” adding that Iran’s response to such actions would be “swift and decisive.”
He also addressed the impact of ongoing tensions on maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, rejecting accusations against Iran.
Araghchi stated that instability in the vital shipping route is a direct result of what he called unlawful attacks by the United States and Israel, urging the international community to hold them accountable.
The Iranian foreign minister further criticized certain countries, including Bahrain, for aligning with U.S. policies and using the United Nations Security Council to exert pressure on Iran.
He described a March 11 Security Council resolution on the region as a “distortion of reality,” arguing that it blamed Iran instead of addressing the actions of those he labeled aggressors.
Araghchi also condemned efforts by the United States and some allies to introduce a similar resolution, calling on Security Council members—particularly Russia and China—to prevent what he described as misuse of the body while military actions against Iran continue.
Lavrov, for his part, reiterated Russia’s condemnation of what he called unlawful U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran. Emphasizing strong bilateral ties, he stated that Russia would continue to work within international forums to uphold international law and prevent the erosion of legal norms in global relations.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry also announced that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi held a phone conversation to discuss the situation in the Persian Gulf region, which they said has significantly deteriorated following U.S. and Israeli actions.
Lavrov stressed that attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure are unacceptable, including the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, warning that such strikes pose serious risks to Russian personnel and could lead to catastrophic environmental consequences for the entire region.
The two ministers also expressed concern over the risk of the conflict—sparked by Washington and Tel Aviv—spreading to the Caspian Sea region.
