Lufthansa to Resume Flights to Iran from 16 January 2026
WANA (Nov 27) – Lufthansa will resume its flights to Iran beginning 16 January 2026.
Coordination procedures and safety and security assessments for Lufthansa’s return to Iran began several weeks ago with the arrival of the airline’s regional manager in Iran, the company’s senior aviation security and risk management officer, and the Austrian Airlines country manager.
Over several days, the team visited Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization, Imam Khomeini International Airport, and various operational centers. They inspected relevant facilities, systems, and operational and management processes, and held technical meetings with Iranian aviation officials to review requirements and preparations for restoring flights.
Based on these evaluations, Lufthansa has finalized its decision to resume operations. According to the arrangements made, flights from Frankfurt to Iran will restart on 16 January 2026.
Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization stated that, given the demand for international travel and Iran’s extensive ties with other countries, the Iranian air transport market offers significant economic opportunities for international carriers. The resumption of Lufthansa flights, it said, will not only strengthen air transport links between the two countries but also potentially encourage other European airlines to re-enter the Iranian market and create new opportunities for expanding Iran’s connections to European and global destinations.
The organization added that enhancing coordination with neighboring countries, expanding regional routes, and opening new destinations remain key priorities for Iranian airlines.
According to the latest reviews conducted by Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization, operational and technical issues affecting Kuala Lumpur flights by Iranian carriers have been resolved. As a result, Iran Airtour will launch its flights to Malaysia starting this week.

In the regional sector, the expansion of air links between Iran and Tajikistan has been one of the notable developments in recent months. Kish Air resumed its flights between the two countries last month, and plans are underway to add new destinations such as Shiraz, Kish, and several other cities. Growing travel demand from Tajik tourists has been cited as a key factor behind this expansion.
The Civil Aviation Organization also announced ongoing discussions to increase flights between Iran and Central Asian countries, including Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, with new proposals submitted by both Iranian and foreign airlines.
In response to rising travel demand from Iraq, the UAE, Oman, Bahrain, and several other Arab countries to Iran’s northern cities, preparations are underway to enable VIP (private jet) flights and non-scheduled operations in the region.
Finally, the organization confirmed that negotiations to expand the Tehran–Paris route remain active, with any final outcome dependent on completing international procedures and concluding the ongoing discussions.
