Major Differences Between Tehran and Washington Remain Unresolved
WANA (May 18) – A source close to the Iranian negotiating team stated that despite some revisions in the new draft presented by the United States, fundamental disagreements between the two sides still remain. According to the source, these disputes stem from what was described as “American excessive demands and a lack of realism.”
The informed source stressed that Iran will not retreat from its firm and principled positions regarding the end of the war and the protection of the Iranian people’s rights. He emphasized that Iran’s frozen assets must be returned in a transparent, definitive, and practical manner, adding that “paper promises” are unacceptable to Tehran. Despite certain commitments being discussed, disagreements reportedly persist over the mechanism for returning the blocked funds.
The source also underlined that Iran is serious about receiving compensation for what it described as U.S. military aggression against Iran. While Washington has reportedly proposed the establishment of a development and reconstruction fund, significant gaps remain between the two sides regarding the scale of compensation and several related issues.
Addressing the nuclear issue, the source described the U.S. demands as “politically motivated excuses” that contradict the rights of the Iranian people. He added that Washington is still attempting to link negotiations over ending the war to Iran’s nuclear file, an approach Tehran considers illogical and unacceptable.
The source further reiterated that Iran has never sought to build nuclear weapons and has no intention of doing so, describing such accusations as “political deception” by the United States. According to the source, this position has also been reaffirmed in the latest version of the negotiation text.
