Nagoya Ends with 19 Golds and Wins for Iran
WANA (Oct 03) – Iran finished the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya in sixth place with 52 medals, including 19 gold, 18 silver and 15 bronze, with the historic performance of the country’s female athletes emerging as one of the highlights of the Games.
Iran’s delegation concluded its campaign after days of ups and downs, improving on its gold-medal tally from the previous edition in Hangzhou, where it won 13 golds. The 19 gold medals in Nagoya represented a 46 percent increase compared with the previous Games.
Iranian Women Make History
One of the most notable developments in Nagoya was the performance of Iran’s female athletes, who secured three gold medals — the best-ever gold-medal haul by Iranian women at the Asian Games. The three golds accounted for 75 percent of the four gold medals won by Iranian women across all previous editions of the Asian Games combined.
Sagar Moradi in taekwondo and Fatemeh Mojallal in rowing won Iran’s first-ever Asian Games gold medals in their respective disciplines, etching their names into the history of Iranian sport. Reyhaneh Karimi also won bronze, becoming the first Iranian woman to win a medal in weightlifting at the Asian Games.
Iran Wins Medals in More Sports
Iranian athletes won medals in 21 sports in Nagoya, up from 20 sports at the Hangzhou Asian Games. The increase showed that Iran’s medal-winning performances extended beyond a limited number of disciplines, with athletes from more sports reaching the podium.
Records and Historic Achievements
Nagoya also saw several records and firsts for Iranian athletes. Ali Davoudi and Ali Alipour set records in weightlifting, while Iran’s artistic gymnastics team secured a historic medal in the vault event.
Iranian swimmers reached the finals of the Asian Games for the first time, while the country also won a bronze medal in padel and a gold medal in esports.
Iran Finishes Sixth with 52 Medals
About 35 percent of the members of Iran’s delegation won medals in Nagoya. Combined with the increase in gold medals and the broader range of sports in which Iran reached the podium, the results marked a notable campaign for the Iranian delegation.
Iran finished sixth in the overall medal standings, one place higher than its position at the previous Asian Games.
The Nagoya Games have now concluded, leaving behind a series of memorable moments for Iranian sport, including historic gold medals and first-time achievements by Iranian women in several disciplines.
