Natanz Nuclear Facility Sustained Only Superficial Damage
WANA (Jun 13) – Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), addressed the United Nations Security Council in a special session held to examine recent Israeli strikes on Iranian territory, including alleged attacks on nuclear facilities.
Grossi confirmed that the Agency has been in “constant contact” with Iranian authorities since the onset of the attacks. According to information provided by Iran, only the Natanz nuclear facility has so far been targeted, sustaining “superficial damage.”
“We received reports today regarding Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure,” Grossi told the Council. “So far, Iran reports that only the Natanz site was hit, with limited damage. There are no indications that the underground portions of the facility were affected. However, the loss of power to centrifuge cascades could potentially be harmful.”
Grossi also noted that no radioactive leakage has been detected outside the Natanz facility.
“The radioactive materials present are primarily alpha particles, which can be effectively contained with proper protective measures,” he explained.
In a significant development, Grossi revealed that Iranian officials have now reported attacks on the Isfahan and Fordow nuclear sites as well.
“These developments are deeply troubling and pose serious risks to global peace,” he stated. “There are international treaties prohibiting attacks on nuclear facilities, and such actions are clear violations of international law.”
Calling for restraint, Grossi urged all parties to avoid further escalation.
“As Director General of the IAEA, I strongly urge all sides to exercise maximum restraint. Any military action that compromises the safety of nuclear sites endangers not only the Iranian people but the broader region.”
Grossi also referred to the recent IAEA Board of Governors’ resolution criticizing Iran, noting that it emphasized the need for a diplomatic resolution.
“We are in continuous dialogue with Iranian authorities to monitor the situation. The Agency stands ready to provide technical assistance under any circumstances. I am also prepared to consult with all parties about deploying additional inspectors to verify the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program and ensure the safety of its facilities.”
He concluded by stressing that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable paths forward.
