WANA (Jun 10) – Iran has executed nine members of the ISIS terrorist group who were convicted of plotting deadly attacks on Iranian soil in 2018, the country’s judiciary announced on Monday.

According to official sources, the individuals were part of a terrorist cell dismantled by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on January 27, 2018.

The IRGC Ground Forces, under the leadership of Commander Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour, intercepted the ISIS team in western Iran before they could carry out coordinated attacks in both the border and central regions of the country.

General Pakpour stated at the time that the terrorists had been deployed into Iran with the intent to launch operations targeting civilians. However, Iranian intelligence and security forces successfully tracked their movements and launched a joint military operation.

The operation, led by the Najaf Headquarters of the IRGC with the assistance of the Ministry of Intelligence, resulted in the death of several militants.

Others were captured after a gun battle in a difficult-to-cross area. Some members of the cell reportedly detonated suicide vests during the confrontation, killing themselves. Three IRGC fighters lost their lives in the clash.

Security forces recovered a significant cache of weapons from the group, including machine guns, 50 hand grenades, thermal imaging devices, pistols, and large quantities of ammunition.

The detainees were charged with moharebeh (waging war against God) through armed rebellion, participation in terrorist activities, and possession of military-grade weapons. The case was referred to the Tehran Prosecutor’s Office, and after an extensive investigation, indictments were issued.

The judicial proceedings were conducted in the presence of the defendants and their legal counsel. Based on confessions, forensic evidence, and involvement in the deaths of three IRGC personnel, the court sentenced all nine individuals to death.

Following the Supreme Court’s confirmation of the verdict, the executions were carried out in accordance with Iranian law.

This is not the first time that ISIS has attempted a terrorist attack in Iran. On June 7, 2017, several Iranians were killed or injured in an ISIS terrorist attack targeting the Iranian Parliament and the mausoleum of the late leader Imam Khomeini.

The attack on the Shah Cheragh shrine was another armed assault that took place in the courtyard of the shrine in Shiraz on the evening of October 26, 2022. As a result of the attack, 13 people were killed and more than 20 were injured. Iran’s Judiciary and the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General both described the incident as a “terrorist” act.

Most recently, a 13-member group had allegedly planned to carry out bombings and acts of sabotage during public ceremonies in Tehran, which were identified and arrested.
