No Factor Can Undermine Iran’s Right to Self-Defense
WANA (Mar 07) – In a statement, Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that Iran’s defensive operations against U.S. military bases and facilities in the region must in no way be interpreted as hostility toward regional countries. The ministry stated that no factor can undermine Iran’s inherent right to defend itself against military aggression by the United States and the Zionist regime.
Tonight (Saturday, March 7), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement stressing the necessity for regional countries to refrain from allowing their territory or facilities to be used for military aggression against Iran.
The statement reads: The joint military aggression by the Zionist regime and the United States against the Islamic Republic of Iran—which began on Saturday, February 28, 2026, with the assassination of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution and several senior officials of the country, along with simultaneous attacks on military and civilian infrastructure including schools, hospitals, sports venues, residential homes, and public service centers—and which continues to this day, constitutes a clear violation of Iran’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty.
The statement further notes that responding to this brutal military aggression is Iran’s inherent right to self-defense, as reflected in Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. The armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran are using all available capabilities to counter this criminal aggression. The exercise of Iran’s inherent right of legitimate self-defense will continue until the aggression stops or until the United Nations Security Council fulfils its duty under Article 39 of the UN Charter by identifying the aggressors and determining the responsibilities arising from their aggression.
The statement adds that, as explained in various communications to the United Nations Security Council, under the fundamental principle of international law prohibiting harm to others from one’s own territory, states are prohibited from allowing their territory to be used—directly or indirectly—to cause harm to other states.
In this regard, UN General Assembly Resolution 3314, adopted unanimously and reflecting customary international law regarding the definition and examples of military aggression, states in Article 3(f) that one example of aggression is when a state allows its territory, which it has placed at the disposal of another state, to be used by that state to carry out acts of aggression against a third state.
The statement further emphasizes that, as a fundamental principle of international law, states must firmly prevent military aggression against other countries by forces stationed on their territory and must not facilitate or support such actions. It is evident that if these fundamental obligations are violated, states whose territory has been used for military aggression against a third state bear international legal responsibility, including for compensation for both direct and indirect damages.
The statement continues: In exercising its inherent right to defend Iran’s sovereignty, and in light of the clear failure of the United Nations Security Council to fulfil its duties and responsibilities under the UN Charter, the Islamic Republic of Iran has carried out necessary and proportionate defensive operations against the bases and facilities of the aggressors in the region. From the perspective of international law, this action is legitimate, and repeated warnings had previously been issued at various levels regarding such measures.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs explicitly stated: No factor can undermine Iran’s inherent right to defend itself against the military aggression of the United States and the Zionist regime. Iran’s defensive operations target objectives and facilities that serve as the source or base of aggressive actions against the Iranian nation or that support such objectives. Countries in the region have undoubtedly realized by now that the U.S. bases on their soil have not contributed to regional security; rather, they have only served to support the child-killing Zionists and American aggressors.
The statement concludes: The Islamic Republic of Iran remains committed to preserving and continuing friendly relations with the countries of the region based on mutual respect, the principle of good neighborliness, and respect for each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It emphasizes that Iran’s defensive operations against U.S. military bases and facilities in the region must in no way be interpreted as hostility toward regional countries.
