NYC Mayor to Negotiate with Trump Over Iranian Fan Ban
WANA (Jan 22) – New York City’s Mayor is seeking to lift the ban on spectators from Iran, the Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Haiti for the upcoming World Cup.
“We are working to change Trump’s policy regarding the exclusion of certain spectators from the World Cup,” stated Zohran Mamdani, the Muslim Mayor of New York, regarding his new efforts to negotiate the lifting of bans on fans from several countries for the 2026 tournament.
For political reasons, Trump has barred fans from four countries—Iran, Senegal, the Ivory Coast, and Haiti—from attending the World Cup. Prior to this, Zohran Mamdani had been one of the primary critics of Trump’s policies concerning the increase in World Cup ticket prices and the restriction of this major tournament to specific social classes.
Mamdani stated: “New York is a city that the entire world can visit, but Trump’s policies are causing some spectators to be deprived of attending my city and this tournament.”
The Mayor of New York emphasised that he will soon enter negotiations with Trump regarding the ban on these spectators. He expressed hope that this policy will be changed so that everyone can participate in the World Cup.
Beyond fan restrictions, Iran faces a major diplomatic deadlock regarding visa issuance for its national team. The U.S. government has reportedly denied or delayed visas for several players and staff members due to political reasons, specifically targeting those who completed their mandatory military service in certain branches of the Iranian armed forces. This administrative hurdle has put Iran’s full participation in the tournament at serious risk, leading to threats of a formal complaint to FIFA.
Additionally, a sharp cultural conflict has emerged over the Iran vs. Egypt match in Seattle. Local organisers scheduled the game to coincide with the city’s “Pride Weekend,” officially branding it as a “Pride Match” featuring rainbow-themed stadium displays.
Both Iran and Egypt have filed official protests with FIFA, arguing that these ideological symbols conflict with their religious and cultural beliefs. They have called for a separation of politics from sports, while Seattle officials currently maintain their plans for the event.

WANA (Oct 07) – The International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) has reportedly proposed an unusual solution to the U.S. government’s refusal to issue visas for members of Iran’s national football team, opting not to pressure Washington directly. According to Mohammed Al-Jazzar, a journalist with Germany’s DPA news agency, FIFA is considering holding the […]
