WANA (Jul 10) – Iranian authorities denied reports of a shooting near the Imam Reza Shrine following the funeral ceremony for the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, saying no security incident occurred around the shrine or along the funeral procession route.

 

The denial followed reports circulated by some local sources claiming gunfire had been heard in Mashhad, including near the Imam Reza Shrine. Those reports alleged that the shooting occurred on Fakouri Boulevard, where two unidentified men in military-style clothing armed with handguns opened fire on several Basij members, killing one at the scene and another later in hospital before fleeing.

 

Officials confirmed, however, that a separate shooting took place in the Sarafrazan neighborhood in western Mashhad, more than 15 kilometers from the shrine.

 

According to Razavi Khorasan Deputy Governor for Security and Law Enforcement Shamghadari, the incident occurred at around 10 p.m. on Thursday and was not a terrorist attack, but the result of a personal dispute.

 

Shamghadari said initial investigations indicate that two individuals became involved in an armed confrontation, during which one was killed. A third person then intervened, resulting in the death of the second individual. Both victims were killed by gunfire.

 

The official reiterated that there had been no shooting or security incident in central Mashhad or around the Imam Reza Shrine, and said the circumstances surrounding the Sarafrazan shooting remain under investigation.
