WANA (Jun 11) – A commercial oil tanker has caught fire in the waters near Oman, prompting responses from international maritime safety agencies and local authorities, according to official reports released today.

 

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) announced it received a report of an incident approximately 21 nautical miles northeast of the Omani port city of Sohar.

 

Local authorities confirmed that the vessel’s crew reported a fire breaking out in the tanker’s engine room. Emergency services are monitoring the situation, and officials stated that no environmental pollution or oil spills have been detected so far.

 

The UKMTO noted that an investigation into the cause of the incident is underway. The agency has advised all transit vessels in the area to exercise extreme caution and immediately report any suspicious activity.

 

Indian Embassy Monitors Developing Situation

Simultaneously, the Embassy of India in Muscat, Oman, confirmed it had been notified of a maritime incident involving a vessel near the Omani port of Shinas earlier today.

 

“We are closely monitoring the situation and are in coordination with local authorities to gather further details,” the embassy statement said.

 

It remains unclear whether the report from the Indian Embassy refers to the same engine room fire near Sohar or if it represents a separate maritime incident in the region.
