Orthodox Church and Russian Elderly Care Home in Tehran Damaged
WANA (Apr 01) – Reports from Tehran, citing the Russian Embassy, say that two missile strikes early on April 01 caused damage near the St. Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral.
According to reports, quoted by the Russian Embassy, the strikes damaged the main cathedral building and surrounding structures, including broken windows and doors.
The statement added that a nearby Russian elderly care home, where residents were still living, also suffered significant damage, including partial roof collapse. No casualties were reported.
The embassy noted that the cathedral was damaged during the fasting period and on the eve of Easter, one of the most important Orthodox religious holidays, saying that due to what it described as U.S. and Israeli military actions, the Orthodox community in Iran has been unable to attend church services.
It also emphasized that the cathedral building, designed by Russian architect Nikolai Markov, is listed as part of Iran’s national cultural heritage.
