WANA (Sep 01) – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for a more effective and influential role for the United Nations in addressing international developments and global crises during a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Kyrgyzstan.

 

According to Iranian media, Pezeshkian thanked Guterres for his positions condemning what Tehran described as recent US and Israeli attacks against Iran, stressing the need to strengthen the role and effectiveness of the United Nations in dealing with international challenges.

 

The Iranian president pointed to existing challenges in the international system, saying that one of the main problems facing the world today is the lack of commitment by some countries to international laws and regulations. He described the US attack on Iran and the targeting of officials, civilians, and infrastructure as examples of violations of international law and humanitarian principles.

 

Pezeshkian also criticized what he called double standards in global affairs, saying that countries presenting themselves as defenders of democracy and human rights must be held accountable for their actions and their approach toward international rules.

 

Referring to efforts to end the war, Pezeshkian said Iran does not seek conflict and that the continuation of hostilities serves no one’s interests. He stressed that ending the current crisis requires the United States to return to its commitments and respect Iran’s rights, adding that Tehran would not accept threats or the use of force.

 

The Iranian president said his country was seeking to enhance regional stability and security through engagement with neighboring states, adding that Tehran continues to pursue dialogue as the path for resolving disputes. However, he said certain actions by the United States and Israel remain among the obstacles to achieving this goal.

 

Pezeshkian also addressed developments in Gaza and Lebanon, describing the humanitarian situation there as alarming and calling on the international community not to allow countries to violate international law simply because they possess greater military power.

Guterres: Crises Must Be Resolved Through Diplomacy

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said during the meeting that he has consistently worked to promote respect for the rule of law, peace, and the reduction of conflicts, emphasizing that his position regarding the recent Iran-related conflict was based on the need for a peaceful and diplomatic solution.

 

Guterres referred to Israel’s role in escalating tensions, saying he believed Israel had drawn the United States into a war with Iran and that the objective of this course was to weaken Iran.

 

He also stated that he was the only UN secretary-general who condemned the attack on Iran at the Security Council, adding that this position brought significant pressure and consequences.

 

Regarding the recent agreement aimed at ending the war, Guterres said the United Nations had welcomed the deal and viewed it as an important political achievement and a step toward ending the conflict, but noted that the process later faced challenges.

 

The UN chief expressed hope that the conflict would come to an end as soon as possible, highlighting Pakistan’s role as a mediator and praising its efforts to help build understanding among the parties and regional countries.

 

He said continued diplomatic efforts and regional cooperation could help pave the way for lasting peace, stability, and security.
