Pezeshkian: US-Zionist Plot Was Revenge for Defeat in 12-Day War
WANA (Jan 22) – President Masoud Pezeshkian, in a message to the Iranian nation on Thursday, expressed deep condolences to the families bereaved by the recent events, describing these incidents as a difficult ordeal for the country. Emphasizing the government’s commitment to safeguarding the people’s rights, he stated that the fair and equitable handling of the detainees’ situation, compensation for the victims, and the identification and eradication of the roots of violence are being pursued seriously.
The text of the President’s message is as follows:
In the Name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful
The noble nation of Iran
What transpired in recent weeks was a hard and difficult ordeal that left profound sorrow in its wake. These bitter events were, more than anything, painful and unacceptable to me as your president and elected representative. The conspiracy of Iran’s ill-wishers transformed the arena of civil and rightful protest into a bloody and violent battleground, resulting in the loss of nearly three thousand lives among the citizens of this land and physical and psychological injuries to thousands more.
The same vile hands that, during the 12-Day War, drenched over a thousand women, men, youth, children, scientists, and commanders of this land in blood, today emerged from another sleeve. Through the staging of a scene by a number of mercenaries, they transformed protest—the natural right of a dynamic and vibrant society—into an unholy rage, in whose fire hundreds of mosques, schools, public places, and national assets were turned to ash.
Precious lives were lost, and beloved bodies were bathed in blood. The martyrdom of nearly 2,500 innocent people and security personnel in the span of a few days of turmoil and insecurity was a venomous occurrence and a profoundly difficult experience that our beloved Iran, as with other major experiences, has endured. The American-Zionist conspiracy of January 2026 was the unmanly revenge of the enemies of the Iranian nation for their defeat in the 12-Day War.
Today, I mourn all the lost lives and stand in solidarity with each and every one of my compatriots who have endured great grief and pain these days. Based on the position and responsibility arising from the trust of the great Iranian nation, I reiterate my enduring pledge to remain a guardian of the people’s rights.
I have tasked various groups to meticulously examine the causes and factors behind these events so that the primary roots of violence are identified and eradicated. Protest is the natural right of citizens, and the government considers it its duty to listen to the people’s voice. In addressing the condition and charges of those recently detained, the utmost care will be taken to ensure that, with justice, fairness, and compassion, a distinction is made between the ranks of protesters—even those who were deceived—and those whose hands are stained with the blood of innocent people.
The government and the ruling establishment consider themselves responsible before all those affected by these bitter events and, with the help and assistance of the valiant Iranian nation, will do everything possible to make amends. Identifying weaknesses and rectifying them, and learning from bitter experiences, will pave the way for the future. The great Iranian nation, under the shadow of its unity and solidarity, and with the empathy of the three branches of government under the guidance of the Supreme Leader, will forge a bright and steadfast future.
