WANA (Mar 09) – The presidents of Iran and France held a telephone conversation on Sunday evening, March 8, 2026, to discuss regional developments and the current situation following the recent war against Iran.

During the call, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that the United States, in coordination with Israel, had carried out an illegal attack on Iran for the second time while negotiations were still underway.

He described the actions as a violation of international law and referred to attacks on civilian targets, including schools, hospitals, and critical infrastructure.

Pezeshkian emphasized that all of Iran’s actions are being taken within the framework of self-defense and warned that Iran would respond proportionally to the attacks.

The Iranian president also cautioned against any involvement by other countries, including France, alongside the attacking parties. He stated that any such action—whether offensive or defensive—would be regarded by Iran as participation in the war. According to him, such involvement would only further complicate the situation and escalate tensions in the region.

He also stressed the firm determination of the Iranian government, its people, and the country’s armed forces to defend Iran and its political system.

French President Emmanuel Macron, for his part, expressed regret over the loss of Iranian civilian lives during the conflict. He stated that France considers the attacks to be inconsistent with international law and emphasised that France has not taken part in the war.

Macron also noted that France is currently consulting with several countries in an effort to reduce tensions and prevent further escalation in the region.

According to the report, the two presidents also discussed consular matters during the call, including prisoners from both countries.
