WANA (Sep 27) – Masoud Pezeshkian, President of Iran, emphasized: “We do not want to withdraw from the NPT. Foreign powers are looking for a flimsy excuse to set the region on fire.”

The President of Iran told Western reporters that even if UN Security Council sanctions are reactivated, Iran does not intend to leave the NPT.

In an interview with various media in New York, Masoud Pezeshkian said, “We do not intend to withdraw from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), even if Security Council sanctions, as expected, are reinstated this weekend.”

He added, “We do not want to leave the NPT. Foreign powers are looking for a superficial pretext to inflame the region.”

Pezeshkian also commented on the course of nuclear talks: “The Trump administration was not honest in nuclear negotiations, even in the talks that took place before Israel’s attack. The wall of distrust between us and the Americans is very high. We reached understandings several times, but they were never taken seriously by the Americans.”

Earlier, in an interview with NBC in response to a question about the possibility of another war against Iran and the imminent meeting between U.S. President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the President said: “We are not afraid of war. We are not warmongers. Trump has said his administration has come to make peace, but the path they have taken will set the whole region ablaze.”

He stressed: “Iran has never started a war and will never be the aggressor. But whoever attacks us, we will make every effort to deliver a crushing response. Without doubt, we will continue to strengthen our capabilities day by day so that no one dares to attack us.”
