WANA (Sep 17) – French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot held a telephone conversation late Tuesday with his Iranian counterpart, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, during which he expressed concern over rising tensions and stressed the importance of preserving dialogue and returning to the diplomatic track.

In the call, Araghchi rejected the European countries’ move to activate the so-called “snapback” mechanism at the UN Security Council, describing it as lacking any political or legal validity and as a step that would only escalate tensions and crisis.

Reiterating the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program, the Iranian foreign minister pointed to the recent agreement between Tehran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), stating: “The Islamic Republic of Iran has always considered diplomacy as the only path to resolving international issues, including the nuclear file, and remains ready for any fair and balanced solution that guarantees mutual interests.”

The two ministers also discussed the state of bilateral relations, including consular matters, and emphasized the need to continue direct contacts and consultations.
