WANA (Mar 09) – The Presidents of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan held a phone conversation on Sunday evening, March 8, 2026, to discuss the latest regional developments, bilateral relations, and areas of mutual cooperation.

 

During the call, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev exchanged views on the regional situation and emphasized the importance of maintaining stability and strengthening ties between the two countries.

 

President Pezeshkian expressed appreciation for President Aliyev’s visit to the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran to offer condolences following the martyrdom of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, as well as the deaths of many civilians in the recent events. He also thanked Azerbaijan for its intention to provide humanitarian assistance to Iran.

 

Referring to the reported aerial shelling incident in Nakhchivan, Pezeshkian stressed that the event had no connection to Iran and stated that the matter would be investigated.

 

President Aliyev, for his part, once again expressed condolences over the deaths of many civilians in the recent incidents in Iran and emphasized the importance of thoroughly investigating the incident that occurred in Nakhchivan.

 

The two leaders also discussed prospects for expanding economic cooperation and advancing joint development projects between Tehran and Baku. They reaffirmed their commitment to continuing consultations aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.
