WANA (Sep 02) – President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized that attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit provided an important opportunity to meet and hold talks with leaders of various countries while advancing the cause of multilateralism.

Speaking on Tuesday, September 1, 2025, while traveling by train from Tianjin to Beijing after participating in the 25th SCO summit, Pezeshkian said the gathering created “a valuable opportunity for us to engage in dialogue with the heads of state of member countries.” He noted that SCO membership has now expanded to more than 20 countries.

The president explained that on the sidelines of the summit, Iran held discussions with several leaders, including exclusive bilateral meetings with some. “In these talks, we worked on building inter-state cooperation, opposing unilateralism, and promoting multilateralism. We discussed shaping a global governance system based on justice, fairness, and recognition of the sovereignty of all nations, large and small,” he said.

Pezeshkian underlined that these discussions can foster cooperation in multiple areas of mutual interest, including technical, economic, scientific, cultural, and industrial fields. “We are seeking to put this into practice. For example, we are working on developing the country’s railway industry. Our goal is to connect the entire nation through rail and train routes, which are cheaper, more environmentally friendly, and capable of carrying more freight,” he stated.

He added that such a framework would also help reduce traffic congestion while supporting sustainable development. “We must establish full rail connectivity across the country,” the president stressed.
