Russia, China Reject UN Security Council Session on Iran Nuclear Issue
WANA (Sep 10) – Russia and China have criticized the UN Security Council’s latest meeting on Iran’s nuclear program, arguing that the issue has already been resolved and that the council should no longer consider it.
Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, said the session was a briefing on an issue that had already come to an end and no longer existed as a matter for the council’s consideration.
Nebenzya said Russia, China and Iran maintain that because the snapback mechanism was not activated by October 18, 2025, the Security Council’s consideration of Iran’s nuclear file had ended and the issue of non-proliferation should be removed from the council’s agenda.
He also said Moscow would prevent efforts to revive the sanctions committee against Iran.
Nebenzya further described US and Israeli attacks on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities as “illegal and dangerous,” warning that such actions could have unpredictable consequences for the region.
Meanwhile, China’s representative at the Security Council said US actions toward Iran were at the root of the current situation in the region.
He pointed to Washington’s unilateral withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal, the US attack on Iran during negotiations and its maximum-pressure campaign as factors that had contributed to the current regional tensions.
The Chinese representative called on the United States to stop using force and engage in genuine negotiations with Iran, stressing that there should be no double standards regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
He also emphasized that Iran, as a non-nuclear-weapon state party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), has the right to peaceful use of nuclear energy and has repeatedly stated that it does not seek to develop nuclear weapons.
