Russia Slams Western-Backed IAEA Draft Resolution on Iran
WANA (Jun 11) – Russia’s permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, has sharply criticized a draft resolution submitted by the U.S. and the European troika (France, Germany, and the UK) to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
In a statement shared Wednesday on his Telegram channel, Ulyanov described the proposed resolution as “very bad and unfair,” warning that its adoption would further worsen the current situation surrounding Iran’s nuclear file. “The draft resolution is deeply flawed and unjust. If approved, it will only exacerbate existing tensions,” he said.
Later in a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ulyanov provided an update on the ongoing session of the IAEA Board of Governors, which is currently discussing oversight and verification activities in Iran. He noted that “there are no new developments” in the session and criticized Western countries for their contradictory stance on the 2015 Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA).
“The West insists that Iran return to full compliance with the JCPOA, yet they show no willingness to uphold their own commitments, particularly on sanctions relief,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov also weighed in, assigning blame to the United States for the current state of the nuclear standoff. He emphasized that under its Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement with the IAEA, Iran remains one of the most verifiable members of the agency.
“There is full confidence that no activity in Iran is inconsistent with the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Iran remains a non-nuclear-weapon state under the NPT, regardless of what its opponents or advocates of maximum pressure may claim,” Ryabkov asserted.
The latest developments come amid reports on Tuesday evening citing Western diplomats, who confirmed that the U.S. and European troika had formally submitted a resolution against Iran to the IAEA Board of Governors. The resolution reportedly accuses Tehran of failing to comply with its nuclear commitments.
In response, Iranian officials have warned that any hostile move by Western countries at the IAEA will be met with an “immediate and proportional” reaction.
