WANA (Oct 28) – Russia’s ambassador to Iran, Alexey Dedov, said that bilateral relations between the two countries have reached an “unprecedented level,” adding that Tehran and Moscow are working together on a large-scale nuclear power plant project.

“Practical work on the high-capacity nuclear power plant project is underway,” Dedov said. “The concept and roadmap have been finalized and agreed upon by both sides, and the first contract for technical design documents is being prepared.”

Dedov noted that Moscow continues to assist Tehran in seeking political and diplomatic solutions regarding Iran’s nuclear program. He called the Western attempt to reinstate UN sanctions against Iran “illegal and procedurally indefensible,” stressing that such measures “create no legal obligations for the genuine members of the international community.”

According to the ambassador, economic cooperation between Iran and Russia has expanded significantly in recent years, with major projects underway in energy, transport, and banking. He cited the integration of the Mir and Shetab national payment systems, construction of the Rasht–Astara railway, and the development of the second and third units of the Bushehr nuclear power plant as key examples of this partnership.

Dedov also referred to the signing of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between Moscow and Tehran in January 2025, describing it as a milestone that elevated relations to a new stage.

On cultural cooperation, he said Russian literature and music enjoy strong popularity in Iran, and several new joint events — including an art exhibition by young Iranian and Russian artists and a session of the “Orthodox–Islamic Dialogue” — are planned in Tehran.

Despite sanctions and technical barriers, Dedov concluded, both countries are “working daily to deepen their economic, technical, and cultural cooperation.”
