WANA (Jan 28) – The Russian Embassy in Tehran has denied reports claiming it refused to issue visas to Iran’s national wrestling team.

In response to allegations that the embassy had disrupted the Iranian wrestlers’ travel to Russia, the embassy said that when representatives of the Iranian Wrestling Federation applied for visas, internet access in Iran was unavailable. Due to these technical issues, the embassy stated, it was unable to issue the visas at that time.

The embassy added that it advised federation officials to apply directly through Russia’s electronic visa website, an independent government service not affiliated with the embassy.

Expressing regret, the embassy said Iranian wrestlers—renowned for their skill and talent—were unable to travel to Russia to participate in the Ivan Yarygin International Wrestling Tournament.

The embassy also called on media outlets that reported it had deliberately refused to issue visas to Iranian athletes to deny these false claims and avoid misleading public opinion.
