Russian Gas to Reach Iran Soon
WANA (Aug 25) – Iran’s ambassador to Moscow expressed hope that Russian gas will soon be delivered to Iran through Azerbaijan.
Kazem Jalali, Iran’s ambassador in Moscow, said that Iran expects to start receiving Russian gas via Azerbaijan in the near future, as almost all issues with Gazprom have been resolved.
He stated: “We hope this will happen soon. We are currently in negotiations with Gazprom, and nearly all the problems have been resolved. However, we still need to reach an agreement on the price. If this issue is settled, everything will move forward.”
Earlier, Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilyov had announced that the first shipments of Russian gas to Iran through Azerbaijan’s existing infrastructure could begin as early as 2025, with volumes reaching up to 1.8 billion cubic meters annually.
Iran’s oil and gas industry has long sought to secure alternative (imported) gas supplies to cover parts of the country’s demand during the colder months. Experts say that the agreement with Russia is aligned with this approach.
Last year, Gazprom signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Iranian Gas Company for pipeline gas deliveries to Iran. This year, Moscow and Tehran reached an agreement for the supply of 55 billion cubic meters of Russian gas.
