Salehi Wins Iran’s First Women’s Gold at Para Athletics World Championships
WANA (Oct 01) – On the fifth day of the World Para Athletics Championships in India, Iran’s Elham Salehi made history by winning the country’s first-ever women’s gold medal at the world championships in the F54 javelin throw event.
Competing on Wednesday, Salehi recorded throws of 16.82m, 16.51m, and 16.13m, with her fourth and sixth attempts ruled invalid. Her fifth attempt of 17.60 meters secured her the gold medal and the world title.
Athletes from Mexico claimed the silver and bronze in the same event.
Elham Salehi has also won bronze in the women’s shot put event on the previous day.
On the fourth day of the World Para Athletics Championships, held on Tuesday, Salehi competed in the F54 shot put class. Her throws measured 7.17m, 7.09m, 7.13m, 6.68m, 6.96m, and 7.13m. With her best mark of 7.17m, she finished third in the world rankings and claimed the bronze medal.
Earlier in the championships, Iran had also secured medals in the F11 shot put, with Amirhossein Alipour winning gold and Mehdi Olad taking silver. Amanollah Papi also won Iran’s first medal, a bronze in the javelin throw, marking the country’s initial success at this year’s World Para Athletics Championships.
Later today, Iranian athletes Zeinab Moradi (javelin throw) and Hajar Safarzadeh (400m for visually impaired athletes) are scheduled to compete in their respective events.
