Seraj: UN Silence Has Emboldened Israel to Violate States’ Sovereignty
WANA (Sep 16) – The Secretary of Iran’s High Council for Human Rights stressed the need for the United Nations to take serious action to halt Israel’s crimes and confront its repeated aggressions.
Naser Seraj, Secretary of the High Council for Human Rights, met with Nada Al-Nashif, Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, in Geneva, where they discussed the human rights dimensions of Israel’s unlawful attack on Iran. He underscored that the UN must act decisively to stop Israel’s crimes and address its repeated violations.
The meeting was also attended by families of those killed during Israel’s 12-day war against Iran. They highlighted indiscriminate attacks on residential areas, hospitals, media centers, and targeted mass killings — including strikes that wiped out entire families. The victims’ families urged the UN and international human rights officials to ensure their voices are heard worldwide.
Seraj stated: “The UN’s silence in the face of Israel’s crimes, or the use of vague language in reference to them, only creates more room for Israel’s audacity and impunity in committing wider human rights violations. Without this silence and double standards, Iran and Qatar would not have become the seventh and eighth countries in the region to be attacked and have their airspace violated.”
He also stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran has consistently sought to advance the rights of its people, pursuing a progressive approach in this field. During Israel’s unlawful attack on Iran, Iranian authorities, he said, made every effort to protect citizens’ lives and security, defend sovereignty and territorial integrity, and even ensure the safety of prisoners following the strike on Evin Prison. According to Seraj, the Iranian people also displayed unprecedented solidarity, sending a strong message to the world.
The two sides also reviewed the latest developments in cooperation between Iran and the Office of the High Commissioner, with particular emphasis on steps to reduce the use of capital punishment — especially through legislative measures and efforts to secure the consent of victims’ families.
