WANA (Jul 31) – Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, Speaker of Iran’s Parliament, reacted to remarks by the Speaker of Israel’s Knesset at the World Conference of Parliaments in Geneva, where the latter had dismissed reports of child starvation in Gaza as “fake news.”

Qalibaf wrote: “The criminal Speaker of the Knesset claims that the starvation of Gaza’s children is fake news. Shame on you! The world is witnessing the greatest genocide in history at your hands. Are UN experts, UNICEF, and humanitarian agencies all lying, while only you speak the truth? You are a disgrace to humanity.”

The response came after the Knesset Speaker, addressing the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva on Monday, rejected Qalibaf’s presentation of images showing Palestinian children killed or suffering from famine in Gaza, claiming that reports of starvation were fabricated.

In his reply, Qalibaf cited four recent official UN reports that directly refute the Knesset Speaker’s claims:

1. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) report titled “UN Experts Say States Face a Momentous Choice: End the Ongoing Genocide or Witness the End of Life in Gaza.”

2. A recent OHCHR report titled “Thirst as a Weapon.”

3. The report by Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur, titled “Anatomy of a Genocide.”

4. UNICEF’s official report released yesterday titled “UN Agencies Warn Gaza Has Passed the Famine Threshold.”

Qalibaf traveled to Geneva on Monday at the head of a parliamentary delegation to attend this international summit. Before his departure, he had stated that his goals were to “strengthen parliamentary diplomacy, expose the crimes of the Zionist regime, and present the demands of the Iranian nation in international forums.”
