Shamkhani: Iran’s Countermeasures Against the European Union Will Be Immediate
WANA (Jan 30) – The representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader on the Supreme Defense Council has warned of an immediate response to the European Union’s recent move against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), describing the decision as a result of a distorted and politicized understanding of terrorism in Western discourse.
Ali Shamkhani wrote in a post on the social media platform X that the West does not “define” terrorism but rather “uses” it as a political tool. He pointed to Western cooperation in the killing of civilians in Gaza, support for bringing what he described as terrorist groups to power, and efforts to engineer insecurity in various countries.
In this context, Shamkhani argued, the IRGC’s role in confronting groups such as ISIS is labeled as “terrorism,” reflecting what he called a fundamental transformation of the concept of terrorism in the political language of the United States and Europe. He stressed that Iran’s countermeasures would be immediate.
The remarks came after Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, announced on Thursday that EU foreign ministers had agreed to place the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on the bloc’s so-called terrorist list.
Critics of the decision say the move runs counter to the European Union’s own legal procedures and has been driven primarily by political considerations rather than legal grounds.
Under EU regulations, an organization can only be designated as a terrorist entity following a court ruling issued by a judicial authority in one of the member states—a requirement that, according to observers, has not been met in this case.
