Snapback Mechanism Would Halt Iran’s New Cooperation Framework with IAEA
WANA (Sep 15) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned European states against triggering the so-called snapback mechanism, stressing that any hostile move could affect Tehran’s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and render the recently established framework insufficient.
Araghchi linked the issue to the Cairo agreement and the possible activation of the snapback, noting that as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a country with a safeguards agreement in place, Iran has consistently cooperated with the IAEA to both protect its national interests and demonstrate the peaceful nature of its nuclear program.
He explained that following recent military attacks, cooperation with the Agency could not continue in its previous form due to new circumstances, including damaged facilities and legislation passed by Iran’s parliament. “This is why we entered into talks with the IAEA to design a new framework for cooperation,” he said.
According to the foreign minister, the entire negotiation process and subsequent agreement with the IAEA were shaped by Iran’s security concerns under the new conditions.
Reiterating Tehran’s warning to European states, Araghchi emphasized: “If any hostile action such as the activation of the snapback is taken against the Islamic Republic, it will directly impact our cooperation with the IAEA, and even the new framework will no longer suffice.”
