WANA (Dec 31) – The Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed appreciation for Iran’s support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, following a statement by Iran condemning Israel’s actions in recognizing the so-called sovereignty of Somaliland.

After the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement denouncing what it described as the Israeli regime’s violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity through recognition of Somaliland, Somalia welcomed Iran’s position and thanked Tehran for its support.

On Saturday, Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, strongly condemned Israel’s move, calling it a blatant violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and a clear breach of the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter and international law.

He described the action as an attempt to advance a plot aimed at the fragmentation of the Islamic country. Baghaei reaffirmed the principled stance of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the necessity of preserving national sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

He said the Israeli move aligns with the regime’s broader policy of destabilizing countries in the region and exacerbating insecurity in the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa.

He also voiced Iran’s support for the firm positions taken by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the African Union in condemning the move, and called on the international community to take decisive action to counter what he described as an expansionist and destabilizing act by the occupying regime.

In response, the Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote on the social media platform X: “We express our sincere appreciation and thanks to Iran for your support for Somalia’s sovereignty and unity.”
