WANA (Feb 04) – At the 145th General Assembly of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), held in Milan alongside the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games, Sorayya Aghaei was elected as a member of the IOC by an overwhelming majority.

 

The assembly was attended by Mahmoud Khosravi Vafa, President of Iran’s National Olympic Committee, Farid Fattahian, advisor to the NOC president, Soraya Aghaei as an IOC membership candidate, and representatives from 208 countries.

 

Out of 100 possible votes, Aghaei secured 95 votes in favor, with three abstentions and two votes against, confirming her membership with a decisive mandate.

 

Aghaei’s candidacy was proposed and supported by IOC President Kirsty Coventry. She is regarded as one of Iran’s most experienced, respected, and ethically distinguished sports figures, with a long record of effective participation in international competitions and professional sports activities.

 

Her election by a strong majority reflects the high level of trust placed in her abilities, athletic background, and professional standing by the global sporting community.
