WANA (Apr 09) – Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a telephone conversation to discuss bilateral relations and the current security landscape in the Middle East.

During the call, Araghchi expressed appreciation for the principled stance taken by the Spanish government and its people.

He commended Spain’s opposition to military escalations involving the United States and Israel against Iran, as well as its condemnation of war crimes.

Araghchi noted that Spain’s defense of international law and human values has earned the respect of both the Iranian people and the international community.

The Iranian Foreign Minister detailed the consequences of the 40-day military campaign led by the U.S. and Israel, emphasizing that all nations have a responsibility to condemn such actions and hold those responsible accountable.

Regarding regional stability, Araghchi stated that Iran has responded positively to the efforts of mediators to establish a ceasefire. However, he stressed that the success of these efforts depends on the United States fulfilling its commitments to end the conflict and halting Israeli military operations in Lebanon.

Minister Albares reaffirmed that upholding international law, protecting human values, and opposing war remain the core principles of Spanish foreign policy. He emphasized that Spain has maintained the illegality of military attacks against Iran from the outset.

The Spanish Foreign Minister welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire and underscored the necessity for all parties to remain committed to the agreement.

He concluded by highlighting the importance of focusing on diplomatic channels to restore lasting stability and security to the region.
