WANA (Feb 17) – The foreign ministers of Switzerland, Ignazio Cassis, and Iran, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, met Tuesday afternoon in Geneva, as the city hosted a second round of indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States.

During the meeting, Cassis welcomed the holding of negotiations in Geneva, saying, “We are very pleased that the talks are taking place in Geneva. This change of venue represents new opportunities for cooperation.”

Araghchi, in turn, praised the Swiss government’s planning and hosting of the discussions. “The precise planning and excellent hosting by the Swiss government have provided an outstanding opportunity for constructive and reliable negotiations,” he said. “We appreciate your efforts in creating a comfortable and trustworthy environment for the talks.”

The two-day Iran–U.S. talks were held Monday and Tuesday at the Omani Embassy in Geneva. On the same day, Switzerland also hosted separate negotiations between Ukraine and Russia mediated by the United States.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said after the conclusion of the second round that the discussions were productive and more substantive than the previous session.

“We had good discussions, and more serious issues were raised compared to the last round,” he said, adding that the atmosphere was more constructive and that various ideas were presented and thoroughly discussed.

Araghchi noted that the two sides reached a general agreement on a set of guiding principles that will form the basis for drafting a potential agreement. “This does not mean we can quickly reach a deal, but the path has begun. We hope it concludes as soon as possible and are ready to devote sufficient time. When we enter the drafting stage, the work becomes more detailed and complex,” he said.

Meanwhile, Oman’s Foreign Ministry said in a post on X that prior meetings included a comprehensive review of the negotiation framework and the political and technical requirements for success, conducted in a realistic and constructive spirit aimed at increasing the chances of reaching understandings aligned with the talks’ objectives.

The ministry added that Tuesday’s negotiations concluded with “tangible progress,” paving the way for their imminent continuation.
