Tajikistan and Iran to Lift Visa Requirements for International Truck Drivers
WANA (Jan 19) – The Tajikistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that starting in early March this year, Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran will abolish visa requirements for each other’s international transport drivers.
A senior official at the Tajik Foreign Ministry told local media that the decision was made under a bilateral agreement between the two governments. Under the new arrangement, eligible drivers will be allowed to stay in each other’s countries for up to 30 days within any 90-day period without a visa.
According to the official, international truck drivers and assistant drivers holding ordinary Tajik or Iranian passports will be permitted to enter each other’s territory without a visa through all border crossing points. Tajik and Iranian drivers will be allowed to remain in the host country for up to 30 days within a 90-day period (30 days every three months) without obtaining a visa.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Asia-Plus that the measure “will facilitate international transportation, strengthen trade and economic cooperation, and increase the profitability of logistics between the two countries.”
The lifting of visa requirements for land routes between Tajikistan and Iran was discussed in April 2025 during a meeting between President Emomali Rahmon and Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni.
At the time, Iranian media quoted Momeni as saying that “it was decided that, at the next stage, by lifting visas for land travel, convenient travel conditions would be created for citizens of both countries.”
Earlier in 2025, Tajikistan and Iran fully abolished visa requirements for air travel between all cities in both countries.
Under that arrangement, citizens of both countries can travel by air without a visa and stay for up to 30 days within a 90-day period. However, citizens entering each other’s countries via land routes are still required to obtain a visa.
