WANA (Aug 31) – Satellite imagery released following a maritime security incident in the Strait of Hormuz reveals that a commercial tanker targeted in an explosion ran aground a day later near Oman’s Umm al-Ghanam Island.

 

According to a report by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the vessel suffered an explosion at approximately 8:53 PM local time on August 29 while transiting northbound toward the Persian Gulf, roughly 12 nautical miles north of Khasab, Oman.

 

No casualties or environmental pollution have been reported, and an investigation into the attack remains ongoing.

Marine tracking group TankerTrackers published satellite imagery showing the damaged tanker stationary at coordinates 26.3756, 56.3431, adjacent to Umm al-Ghanam Island. Visual indicators suggest the vessel is likely a Kuwaiti-flagged tanker.

 

The incident marks the third attack on a commercial tanker in the Strait of Hormuz within a single week. It follows similar strikes targeting the Kuwaiti-flagged tanker Al Salam II on August 25 and the Liberian-flagged Metro Venetian on August 24.
